The Greater Wenatchee Valley was awarded the 2011 Encore Award for our 2010 efforts!

Our well-established tradition of “see a need, do a good deed” on the 4th Saturday of October is grass-roots, straight-from-the-heart-giving and it reaches into nearly corner of our community. Each project has a wonderful story behind it - from the organizers and the volunteers to the recipients. Our community depends on this day to be strengthened, cleaned up, and rejuvenated.

In 2013, the communities in the heart of Washington state saw an estimated 8,000 people turn out to participate in close to 80 projects which were open to the community... and uncounted people participated in their own ways in their own private projects. We support every project and encourage every idea.

Thank you to each one of you who found a way to participate.

The Wenatchee area has been a leader in Make a Difference Day since the beginning. In 1992, our local efforts led us to receive the first national award in 1993 for a Make a Difference Day community. The Wenatchee Valley received “Encore Awards” for outstanding Make a Difference Day efforts in 1995, 1997, 1998, 2002 and 2011, as well as an “honorable mention” for work in 1994.

All year long, we are working to better the place we live, but on Make A Difference Day - watch out! Our projects span the spectrum of meeting needs for the elderly, youth, animals, the environment, domestic abuse, homelessness, education, hunger, people with disabilities, community revitalization, and health and welfare. We gather together as neighborhoods, schools, clubs, churches, businesses, government agencies, friends and new acquaintances to work on projects large and small. We don't care if one person works on a project, or if there were 1,000 eager participants. Each project is equally important. We think that's the secret to our success. This day is open to anyone - young or old, rich or poor. We all have something we can do to reach outside ourselves and make someone else's life better.

We love to hear what people are working on. It helps us not to duplicate efforts and sometimes join hands with one another on projects we care about. We have an amazing turnout. But we are not about the numbers. We know lots of people participate and don't say a word to the organizers. And we love that! The spirit of Make A Difference Day is to see a need and then do a good deed.

DINNER FROM NEW LIFE ADOPTIONS

Why cook when you can enjoy an incredible dinner for two while continuing to make a difference? Order a meal for two of chicken fettuccini with Alfredo sauce from the recipe created by our own executive chef and director of the Wenatchee School District food program, Kent Getzin, and be part of New Life Adoptions' mission to change children's names from 'foster kid' to 'Son' and 'Daughter.' You'll get a great, ample meal for two for only $25. Your meal will be ready to pick up on Make a Difference Day, Saturday October 25, between 3 and 5 PM at the Wenatchee High School, ready to reheat and eat. It couldn't be easier and you'll be a partner in the lives of our 31 children who are no longer foster kids, and in helping the 9 foster children currently in New Life homes to become Sons and Daughters! E-mail Mike Magnotti at maddog@nwi.net to place your order.
